2012 Games

Escape to Real England.

For a truly English experience Woodbridge has it all. If you are visiting the Olympics or Paralympics games in 2012 you must take in all that Woodbridge has to offer in the way of quintessential Englishness. Ancient streets and buildings, over 1000 years of history, a riverside with views to die for, vibrant shops and markets, characterful places to stay and a mecca for good food and drink.

An exciting programme of typically English events is being organised in and around Woodbridge in the run up to and including the Games dates.(The Olympic Games run 27 July-12 August  and the Paralympics from 29 August- 9 Sept 2012.)

Travel to Woodbridge from the main site for the Games at Stratford couldn’t be simpler. Take the train heading North for just over an hour and you will be out of London and in the heart of Woodbridge pulling in to a station with splendid views of the River Deben.

The programme is being constantly added to but we already know that it will kick off with an event that is truly English:

  • Easter Saturday 7 April Free Easter Egg Hunt, Egg & Spoon Race and a whole lot more family fun in Elmhurst Park.
  • Monday 23 April  A St George’s Day celebration in the town centre. There will be red cross buns for sale and a procession headed by St George on a huge Suffolk Punch horse.
Dates are being finalised now for the following:
  • Grand Re-opening of the restored Woodbridge Tide Mill
  • Living History Days at Sutton Hoo, the legendary Anglo-Saxon burial ground, just across the River Deben.
  • Suffolk Punch Horse Wagon Rides around the town
  • Special events at the new Suffolk Punch Trust Centre at Hollesley (just outside Woodbridge).
  • Guided walks with a history or nature theme
  • 27 July to 28 August Theatre in the Forest  produced by Red Rose Chain
  • Music in the Park
  • Vintage and Contemporary Markets
  • Morris Dancing
  • Open Top Bus service
The entire programme will come to a glorious end with:

8 & 9 September. Maritime Woodbridge – a celebration of Woodbridge’s boat building and trading heritage with historic boats from around the country moored along the quays and free access to the iconic wooden Tide Mill on the River Deben.
