Can you continue to develop a national treasure? The Tide Mill in Woodbridge is a Grade I listed building of international significance.

Built in 1793, it’s the fourth on the site since 1170. It was saved from demolition in 1968 by Mrs Jean Gardner who gave it to the town in 1977. The Charitable Trust that runs and maintains it was founded in 1971. The Trustees have restored the Mill twice since then to its current, and unique in England, running condition.

The Mill is a living museum that gives today’s visitors a working glimpse into history. It combines over 850 years of history with engineering, food production, a natural setting and impeccable environmental credentials. The Mill takes its duty to show visitors and students of all ages and nationalities how our forebears harnessed the energy of the tides and simple, wholesome local grain to feed themselves. No wonder it remains a popular destination for group visits.

The Trust is looking for a new Chair of Trustees. The current Chair has driven much development and the Mill is in good shape for the foreseeable future. Challenges exist but there is a strong team to support a replacement.

In the words of the current Chair “The greatest thing about the Mill, alongside its historical importance, is the visitors. They have such a wide range of enthusiasms, industrial and social history, food, milling, engineering, wildlife, art, sailing, Suffolk all sorts of elements. We love to see young people visiting too either coming from schools/universities, clubs or with relatives. The Mill’s displays help them understand the history, technology and the use of the renewable energy that the Mill demonstrates. This is all maintained by a great team of experienced staff and volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds.”

The Charity Trustees manage grants and income from entry, flour and merchandise sales to maintain the Mill. The Chair looks across a wide range of activities ranging from strategic planning to liaison with key stakeholders. Each area of activity at the Mill has a team leader whether a trustee or volunteer.

The Chair of Trustees is an important and energising role. The Mill currently pays its way and has reserves to cover the unforeseen. It managed covid well. The challenge remains to keep building audiences and income, both from access and grants while continuing to maintain the fabric. If you think you can meet this challenge then email the current Chair, John Carrington at chair@woodbridgetidemill.org.uk.
